The former Wigan player signed a one-year deal with the Roosters despite having already completed a medical with the Tigers.
Riddell performed an 11th-hour about-turn largely due to the likelihood he would have to play second fiddle to Tigers captain Robbie Farah and might have to drop down to the Premier League.
The 29-year-old was released by Wigan with a year left on his contract because he wanted to return to Sydney to look after his mother, who is suffering from cancer.
Riddell, who made 178 NRL appearances with St George Illawarra and Parramatta before moving to Super League two years ago, made the last of his 62 appearances for Wigan in their 22-10 win over St Helens in October's Grand Final at Old Trafford.
