Lindsay rules out Preston exits

A number of the squad, including keeper Andy Lonergan, have been linked with moves away from Deepdale.

However, Lindsay insists that no players will be allowed to leave as they look to climb off the bottom of the Championship.

"We have had several phone calls from different clubs asking us to let some of our players go out on loan," Lindsay told the club's official website.

"The answer has been no every time and we want to make it quite clear to our supporters that we are not interested in any monies whatsoever offered to us by clubs who are trying to take our players on loan.

"We are in a terrific battle to try and maintain our championship status. We are not going to do anything to weaken our chances."

Dalglish coy on Carroll

The former Newcastle United marksman, who joined the Reds for £35million before the transfer window closed, is yet to make his debut due to a thigh injury.

Carroll has been undertaking training with his new team-mates but, as he is yet to play a game for the Merseysiders, Sunday's contest could come too soon.

The availability of the club's record signing would give the Reds a huge boost following their disappointing 3-1 defeat to strugglers West Ham last weekend.

FA to probe Fergie remarks

The Manchester United manager was unhappy with a number of the decisions made by referee Martin Atkinson following his side's 2-1 defeat in midweek.

Atkinson's call to award the Blues a late penalty for a foul by Chris Smalling on Yuri Zhirkov was described as 'soft' by Ferguson, but it was the failure to send David Luiz off for a clear trip on Wayne Rooney after the Brazilian had already been booked that really annoyed the Scot.

Although the United manager's comments on Sky Sports were critical of the official, it is the remarks he made to his club's own in-house station which the FA believe may have gone too far by questioning Atkinson's integrity.

The FA has no power to order MUTV to hand over a copy of the interview but feel it would be in Ferguson's best interests as it can often bring comments into context that look harsh in print.

Gunnarsson granted loan deal

The Iceland international has been with the Royals since 2005, making almost 150 appearances for the club.

He has, however, fallen down the pecking order and has found first-team opportunities limited this term.

The 35-year-old is keen to find regular football before his contract expires in the summer and hopes a loan switch will allow him to showcase his talents.

A vastly-experienced performer, the former Stoke and Nottingham Forest man is able to operate in a number of positions.

Gunnarsson has already spoken with Reading boss Brian McDermott about his situation and has been informed that the door is open should a suitable offer arise.

His representative Olafur Gardarsson told skysports.com: "He has spoken with the manager and has been given permission to go out on loan. His contract will expire in June.

"He is mainly a holding midfielder but can also play at centre-back. Yesterday [in Reading's 1-0 FA Cup victory at Goodison Park] he played as a right-back against Everton."

Points deficit shocks Carlo

The Blues came from behind to beat the Red Devils 2-1 in an enthralling encounter on Tuesday night as Frank Lampard's late penalty secured victory after David Luiz cancelled out Wayne Rooney's opener.

The result pushed Chelsea above Tottenham and back into the top four but they remain 12 points adrift of current leaders United.

Having played one game less than Sir Alex Ferguson's men, Ancelotti admitted after the final whistle at Stamford Bridge that his team were still alive in the hunt for top spot.

However, the Italian accepts that United are unlikely to drop enough points for Chelsea to be able to stage a sensational late comeback and retain their crown.

Ancelotti will continue to take things one match at a time but he is unhappy that Chelsea have allowed themselves to slip so far back and accepts they must be realistic with time now running out.

"We are too far from Manchester United," said the manager, who has been baffled by his side's inconsistency this term.

"It's difficult for them to lose points in the next few games.

"We have to concentrate on ourselves and look not too far in the future.

"I cannot believe we are this far behind, but we have to be honest.

"This is where we are in the table, and United have played with more consistency than us."
