The 20-year-old, who was named Leeds' young player of the year last season, faces around six weeks on the sidelines.
Leeds are confident, though, that the utility man will be fit for the start of the 2011 Super League campaign.
Head coach Brian McDermott explained: "It is disappointing for Chris as he was training well in pre-season.
"However, if there is ever a good time to suffer an injury like this it is now and we are confident Chris will be back for the start of the season."
Clarkson, who this time last year was still an apprentice bricklayer, acknowledged it was frustrating to suffer the injury but was determined to return as soon as possible.
"I took the knock in training and unfortunately it is going to need an operation," he told the club's official website.
"Hopefully I can continue most of my fitness work and I won't miss out on too much in pre-season."
