Murray was hugely impressive despite his 7-6 (7/5) 3-6 7-6 (8/6) defeat to the world number one in the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
The pair slugged it out for three hours and 11 minutes, during which the crowd at the O2 Arena were treated to one of the finest displays of top class tennis of the year.
And Nadal admitted afterwards he had needed to produce one of the best performances of his life to beat the Scot.
"His level is unbelievable almost always," said the Spaniard. "He's a very talented player because he can do everything.
"His serve at moments was unstoppable. His defence was unbelievable. He's very fast. He sees the ball very quick, before the rest of the players I think.
