The Belgian won the award for a second time having picking up a third US Open title as well as four other tournament victories including the WTA Championships in Doha.
"It's really nice to win the Player of the Year award just one year after making a comeback and while I didn't think it would come so quickly, I am thrilled with the news," she said.
"I want to thank my fellow players and the media who voted for me and I look forward to seeing everyone again in Australia."
Petra Kvitova won Newcomer of the Year following her run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon, while Comeback Player of the Year went to Justin Henin, who reached the final of the Australian Open on her return from retirement.
Elena Dementieva, who retired from the WTA in October, was honoured with the Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award, which acknowledges a player's conduct, attitude and sense of fair play. It was her second time receiving it.
Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta earned Doubles Team of the Year.
